There is a genuinely unusual ground condition northwest of Lincoln that most flatwork bids ignore, and Malcolm sits near the middle of it. The Little Salt Creek and Rock Creek drainages north and northwest of the city hold Nebraska's eastern saline wetlands — ground where salt-bearing groundwater from deep bedrock reaches the surface. It is a rare enough habitat that a lot of conservation effort goes into protecting it. What it means for concrete is that in parts of this area the soil and shallow groundwater can carry dissolved sulfates and chlorides at levels that matter to a slab.
Sulfate is the one to take seriously. Sulfate in solution reacts with ordinary portland cement paste to form expansive compounds inside hardened concrete, and those compounds destroy it from the inside out — starting at the surface that meets the ground, staying invisible for years, and then showing up as softening and disintegration at the slab edges and underside. The defense is straightforward when somebody bothers: a sulfate-resisting cement, Type II for moderate exposure and Type V for severe, plus a genuinely low water-to-cement ratio, because dense concrete is what keeps the solution from getting in at all. The rest of the local picture is standard eastern Nebraska with a rural accent. Around Branched Oak in particular, watch what the drainage does — the reservoir and its watershed mean a lot of ground out here is shaped by where water goes, and a slab placed without accounting for that is a slab in a future watercourse.
Long acreage driveways are their own design problem. They are drainage structures as much as driving surfaces, and the crown, the cross-fall, and the grade at both ends decide whether you can clear one in February or whether you own a hundred-foot north-facing ice sheet. Sulfate attack is a chemical reaction between sulfates dissolved in soil or groundwater and the cement paste in hardened concrete. Done properly there is an isolation joint between them and drilled dowels holding the elevations together so they cannot step apart. Done carelessly you get a lip and a water channel within two winters. Thickness matters too: five inches minimum for an RV, six for a big fifth wheel or anything with a tandem axle, because jacks and stabilizers put concentrated point loads on the slab that a sidewalk section will not take.
